Dry Chemical Powder (DCP) (ABE) Fire Extinguishers
The Dry Chemical Powder (ABE) extinguisher is the most versatile and widely used fire safety tool in Australia. It is often referred to as a “multi-purpose” extinguisher because it is capable of tackling several different classes of fire safely.
Identification
Under AS/NZS 1841.1, all fire extinguishers in Australia must be painted Signal Red. A Dry Chemical Powder (ABE) extinguisher is specifically identified by a white band located around the cylinder near the top.
Fire Classes & Suitability
According to the FPA Australia Portable Fire Extinguisher Guide, ABE powder extinguishers are rated for the following:
- Class A: Ordinary combustibles (wood, paper, textiles, rubber, and many plastics).
- Class B: Flammable liquids (petrol, oil, paint, and solvents).
- Class C: Flammable gases (LPG, natural gas, and acetylene).
- Class E: Electrically energised equipment (computers, switchboards, and power tools).
Important Note: While effective on many fires, ABE powder is not recommended for Class F fires (cooking oils and fats). For kitchen-specific risks, you should consult Fireshift regarding Wet Chemical alternatives.
How It Works
The ABE powder works by discharging a fine chemical dust (usually monoammonium phosphate) that interferes with the chemical reaction of the fire triangle. On Class A fires, the powder melts to form a “blanket” that smothers the fuel and prevents re-ignition. Because the powder is non-conductive, it is the primary choice for electrical fire safety.
Placement & Compliance (AS 2444)
To remain compliant with AS 2444:2001, ABE extinguishers must be:
- Mounted Correctly: The top of the handle should be no higher than 1200mm from the floor.
- Signposted: A standard red and white identification sign must be mounted at least 2000mm above the floor directly above the unit.
- Accessible: A minimum clearance of 1000mm must be maintained around the extinguisher at all times.
Comparison Table: ABE vs. Other Types

| Colour Band | White | None (All Red) |
| Electrical Safe | Yes | No (Danger) |
| Wood/Paper | Yes | Yes |
| Flammable Liquids | Yes | No |
